What does the qualification cover?
This qualiﬁcation provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools.
It covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher, bilingual and special needs support and personal development and reﬂective practice. This qualification has a total of 44 credits
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone working in a role supporting learning such as a teaching assistant, one-to-one support, learning support assistant or learning mentor. This qualification enables you to specialise by selecting from a broad range of optional units. The choice of optional units include cover supervision, SEN, supporting teaching and learning, supporting bilingual learners or lead TA.
What are the entry requirements?
You should be at least 16 years old with a good standard of written and spoken English.
You need to have a placement in a school setting to gain experience. We recommend spending at least 2 days each week in school, however there is no set requirement. Your placement could be paid or voluntary.
How is it assessed?
It will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This will include ongoing assignments to build a portfolio of evidence and an observation in the workplace carried out by the TA College. There are no exams to complete or attend.
How long does it take to complete?
You can usually complete it in a year, we allow you 18 months, however because we allow you to study at your own pace you can complete far more quickly if you have more time to dedicate to school placement and your studies.
What related qualifications can you progress to?
A Degree in a related subject such as Education Studies, Teacher training or a Foundation Degree in Education.
