Vocational qualifications have changed
They have become more responsive to the demands of employers and you the learner, an essential tool in this reform of vocational qualifications is the QCF
What is the QCF? (Qualification and Credit Framework)
- The QCF is a new way of creating and accrediting qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. They are also recognised in Scotland
- It is replacing the existing National Qualifications Framework
- All qualifications have been reviewed and redeveloped for the QCF with the existing qualifications withdrawn in December 2010.
- If you have recently gained NVQ’s or are studying currently you will not have to repeat learning as your qualifications will still stand and remain recognised by schools for years to come
- Until the end of December 2010 you will have a choice whether to do the existing qualifications or undertake these new QCF ones
- The QCF framework awards credit for qualifications and units, providing greater flexibility and allowing learning and qualifications to be achieved in smaller steps to build up qualifications bit by bit through the accumulation of credit.
- It will give a wider range of learners the opportunity to get the qualifications they need, in a way that suits them
- QCF qualifications are designed with the help of employers so you can be assured that your gaining skills that employers are looking for
- The QCF also enables your work-based training to be nationally recognised.
Why has it been developed?
- At present, it can be difficult to understand all the different types of qualification that learners hold, what level they are, how long they take to complete, what content they cover, and how they compare to other qualifications.
- The QCF has been designed to offer more freedom and flexibility for you the learner by allowing you to build up credits at your own pace, and combine them in a way which will help you get where you want to be
- The QCF will allow employers to measure quickly the level and size of achievements of any potential employees
- The qualification titles within the QCF are designed to give a very clear indication of the level, content and volume of learning
- Staff can also undergo training options and pathways which are tailored to the specific business needs.
How will it work?
- With the QCF, each qualification will have a unique title which will clearly show every unit and qualification in the framework and will have
- A credit value: One credit represents 10 hours, showing how much time it takes to complete
- Levels - between Entry level and level 8, showing how difficult it is
- The credit value – will determine the size of the qualification and how long it will take
There are 3 sizes of qualifications in the QCF
- Awards: (1 to 12 credits) is the smallest type of qualification on the QCF, taking between 10 and 120 hours to complete
- Certificates: (13 to 36 credits) it takes between 130 and 360 hours to complete
- Diplomas: (37 credits or more) so takes at least 370 hours to complete.
Credit transfer and recording achievement
- Credit will be transferable between Awarding Bodies, which offers greater flexibility and means that you doe not have to ‘repeat’ any of your previous training
- To keep track you will be given access to a centralised online Learner Record (LR)
- This will log all of your QCF unit and qualification achievement from mid 2010
- You will also be assigned with a unique learner number (ULN) which helps to enable transfer of credit across awarding bodies
- The way that credits and units make up a full qualification is determined by the rules of combination which are decided by Awarding Bodies working in close partnership with Sector Skills Councils and other related organisations.
