It’s suitable for people who are working in classroom support or specialist support roles in a school, special school or college.

Entry requirements

You must be at least 16 years old and have a good standard of written and spoken English.

How does it work

You will be assigned a Personal Support Tutor who will support you throughout your qualification and assess your work. You will be sent a textbook and candidate handbook which you can use throughout the qualification, as well as having your own online portfolio. This portfolio is a streamlined, easy to use system where you will be able to access your eLearning, submit your work and track your progress throughout the qualification.

How will you be assessed

The knowledge elements of the course will be assessed through assignments which you will submit to your online portfolio, which your Personal Support Tutor will assess for you.

The practical elements of the course will be covered through a combination of direct observation by your work place mentor and reflective diaries and professional discussions.

How long does it take

You will be given 18 months to complete this course, but it can be completed quicker if you are able to put more time into your studies.

Placement

You will need a placement to complete the qualification, as you will need to demonstrate practical skills and competency in the classroom. This could be in any school or college setting, working with children 5 years old and over. We recommend you should be doing a minimum of two half days or one full day a week in your placement, but the more experience you can get the better.

Who can your mentor be

You will need to ask a teacher who holds Qualified Teacher Status to carry out your observations for you, and then to send these to your Personal Support Tutor.

We recommend you do between 6 and 8 20 minute observations over the duration of your qualification, to cover practical criteria in each unit.

Your mentor will receive training and standardisation guidance from your Personal Support Tutor, which is a requirement of the awarding body. This is included in the cost of the qualification.
